{"id":1114,"date":"2010-08-03T14:40:48","date_gmt":"2010-08-03T20:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ruralroute2.com"},"modified":"2020-12-22T13:32:58","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T19:32:58","slug":"saltwater-taffy-a-great-activity-for-a-winter-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ruralroute2.com\/index.php\/recipes\/saltwater-taffy-a-great-activity-for-a-winter-afternoon\/","title":{"rendered":"Saltwater Taffy (A great activity for a winter afternoon!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to buy <a title=\"The Rural Route 2 Cookbook\" href=\"http:\/\/ruralroute2cookbook.com\/\">The Rural Route 2 Cookbook.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I was growing up on our small family dairy farm in Wisconsin, making taffy was a fun project for a Sunday afternoon in the winter.<\/p>\n<p>1 cup sugar<\/p>\n<p>3\/4 cup light corn syrup<\/p>\n<p>2\/3 cup water<\/p>\n<p>1 tablespoon cornstarch<\/p>\n<p>2 tablespoons butter<\/p>\n<p>3\/4 teaspoon salt<\/p>\n<p>2 teaspoons vanilla (or another flavoring, such as peppermint or anise)<\/p>\n<p>In a large saucepan, combine all ingredients except the vanilla. Stirring constantly, cook over medium heat until the mixture reaches 256 degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer (or until a small amount dropped into a cup of cold water forms a hard ball).<br \/>\nStir in vanilla. Pour into a buttered 8\u00d78 square pan. Let cool.<\/p>\n<p>Note: if you would like to make colored taffy, stir in a few drops of food coloring just before you add the vanilla or other flavoring.<\/p>\n<p>When the mixture is cool enough to handle, rub a small amount of soft butter between your palms, take a handful of taffy and pull until it becomes stiff and lighter in color.
