An Unfortunate Mouse

As I reached through the fence to get Isabelle’s feed tub Wednesday morning I saw it — one poor little flat very dead mouse.

Isabelle delicately sniffed the mouse, snorted lightly and then gave it a wide berth.

“Okay,” I said. “So now my horse is catching mice?”

It seems to me there *are* quite a few mice this year.

I dumped her feed into the tub and set it inside the fence for her.

Then it dawned on me. The poor little mouse had probably been eating some of the feed Isabelle had dropped when she came along, didn’t see it there and stepped on it. Isabelle cleans up her food quite well, but she does drop a few bits here and there.

In all of the years I have owned horses, I have never seen one of my horses step on a mouse. Not that I know of anyway.

While Isabelle ate her feed, she would, from time to time, glance at the mouse, snort lightly and then go back to her feed.

I think Isabelle must feel bad about the mouse, too.
