Happy New Year!

Talk about up and down weather. The temperature warmed up in the 30s this past week, and then it rained on Thursday and Friday. By Saturday morning, New Year’s Day, the bottom had dropped out of the temperature and we had below-zero windchills with a high of about five degrees.

It’s funny how when it is warmer out, in the 20s and 30s, you don’t even think much about it. You go outside to do this and that, and it seems so pleasant to not be below zero but it isn’t something you give much thought to.

But then, when the temperature drops and there’s a below zero windchill, you think about it a lot. You think about how you don’t want to go outside. And you think about how you’d like to be inside when you’re outside. And you think about how much more difficult life is when it is below zero. And you wonder if your feet are ever going to feel warm again. And you just generally feel sorry for yourself. And the animals.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that it turned so bitterly cold. It *is* January in Wisconsin, after all.

I would have rather that it snowed rather than rained, though. Because now we’ve got glare ice all over the paths and the driveways and the roads, in places. It’s not so bad when you can just walk and not worry about your feet flying out from underneath you. But when it’s glare ice, you spend a lot of time inching along and trying to stay upright.

On the other hand, spring will arrive sooner or later. . .

Happy New Year!
